The Power of Moxibustion in Postpartum Healing

Postpartum recovery is a sacred time that requires warmth, nourishment, and intentional care. In many traditional cultures, keeping the new mother warm is a fundamental part of postpartum healing. One of the holistic practices I incorporate into my postpartum care package is moxibustion—a powerful, time-honored technique that supports the body’s healing process after birth.

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion, or “moxa,” is a form of heat therapy that involves burning dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near the skin to stimulate circulation and promote healing. This practice has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine and various other healing traditions around the world.

Mugwort is a warming herb known for its ability to move stagnant energy, increase blood flow, and support the body's natural healing abilities. It is also antimicrobial, making it an excellent ally in postpartum recovery.

How is Moxibustion Used Postpartum?

One of the most important applications of moxibustion for new mothers is a practice called Mother Warming. This technique is traditionally performed around the first week postpartum to restore warmth to the body, boost circulation, and support the uterus in its natural process of contracting and healing. By gently applying heat over the lower abdomen and lower back, Mother Warming helps:

  • Encourage uterine involution (shrinking back to pre-pregnancy size)

  • Relieve postpartum cramping and discomfort

  • Support digestion and energy levels

  • Promote emotional well-being and relaxation

I use either a moxa stick, which looks like a cigar and allows for indirect application of heat, or a moxa box, which safely contains the burning moxa and is placed over the abdomen or back for deep, soothing warmth. Both methods allow for safe, controlled exposure to the healing benefits of mugwort.

The Importance of Keeping the New Mother Warm

In many cultures, postpartum traditions emphasize the importance of warmth in the healing process. The body is in a vulnerable state after childbirth, and exposure to cold can slow healing and contribute to discomfort, fatigue, and even postpartum imbalances. Keeping warm helps:

  • Support circulation and blood flow

  • Reduce the risk of postpartum chills and body aches

  • Strengthen overall energy and recovery

I integrate this wisdom into my postpartum care, ensuring that mothers receive the warmth and nourishment they need to heal fully.

My Training and Commitment to Holistic Postpartum Care

I have been trained through INNATE Postpartum Care and the Nafsa Project, both of which emphasize the importance of traditional healing practices in supporting postpartum families. My approach is rooted in honoring these ancestral traditions while tailoring care to meet the unique needs of each mother.

Moxibustion is just one of the many offerings available in my postpartum care package, alongside herbal support, traditional postpartum nutrition, and hands-on care. If you’re interested in learning more about how moxibustion can support your postpartum recovery, I’d love to connect and create a personalized healing plan for you.
